PBVS Veterinary Scholarship Program

Santiago Diaz Biography

My name is Santiago Diaz and I am a third year veterinary student at the University of Florida. I am originally from Colombia but came to the United States with my father four and a half years ago. In my home country, I was in vet school but I did not have the opportunity to graduate due to safety reasons. However, I put a lot of effort into completing my pre-requisites and was able to resume my veterinary education again at UF.

Before veterinary school I volunteered for one year at the Flamingo Gardens Wildlife Sanctuary located in Davie, Florida. There, I helped take care of some of the most important Floridian wildlife including Florida panthers, American alligators and bald eagles among other species. I then worked at an exotic animal practice in Pompano Beach as the head veterinary technician for two years while attending Florida Atlantic University as a full time student.

Because of my interest in wildlife and exotic animals, upon graduation I aspire to work in a private practice treating exotic and pocket pets. I also hope to work as a per diem vet at local zoos the Palm Beach County. I’m also interested in conducting research on endangered species and being part of state programs that focus on saving our native animals and plants from the invasion of non-indigenous species. During the summer of my first year in veterinary school here at UF, I conducted a research project with a scholarship that I obtained from the Morris Animal Foundation which is only given to 25 students from veterinary schools around the United States. My mentor and I developed a serology test to detect tuberculosis in captive Asian elephants. The project was completed before classes started again and I am very proud to say that we obtained excellent results. I went to the Merck Merial conference in July of 2008 and to the Morris Animal Foundation conference in May of 2009 to present the results of my project. At the latter conference, I was awarded third place in the wildlife category. Besides the prestige of earning an award and receiving much needed scholarship funds, these conferences were of great benefit to me additionally by introducing me to experts in the zoo medicine field and in building great contacts for my future professional career.

Since the beginning of this year, I have been taking several classes and I have been writing up my research project, both for publication in a well-renowned journal and for an elective class at the veterinary school which will allow me to graduate with honors. Throughout vet school, I have been deeply involved with our wildlife club, WZAAM. I have held both wetlab and speaker coordinator positions and I am currently the club’s president. I am also the vice-president for the Reptile and Amphibian club (ARAVSC), and the Lafeber student rep. Additionally, I am in the process of creating an Anesthesia club for our school.
